Guest Blogger, Shelly Nunez (A Passion For Paws Rescue)
My name is Shelly Nunez…and I’m a dog-person! Being a volunteer for A Passion For Paws Rescue, Inc. is the hardest job I’ve ever LOVED. I’m not the one who picks up poop, or goes around refilling water pails or spraying down dogs on hot days. I work behind the scenes coming up with ways to spread the news about our mission – to save the lives of Akitas, and other large breed dogs, awaiting euthanasia in municipal shelters. We network with 29 shelters across the southwestern United States who alert us when dogs are in danger of being euthanized.
First, we RESCUE them, and dogs are relocated to our Akita Ranch facility in Romoland, California. See the concern on his face when Victor was dumped at a high-kill shelter awaiting death:
Then, we REHABILITATE them by restoring each dog’s physical health through spay/neuter, microchip and veterinary procedures; before concentrating on their emotional health by providing positive reinforcement, adequate exercise, behavioral training and social conditioning.
Here is Victor again, at Akita Ranch getting a second chance on life! Not looking so sad anymore:
The last phase is RE-HOMING them; putting dogs in safe loving homes. Victor is waiting on his forever home, but Ellie here, hit the jackpot in August and now has a boy of her own to look after!
We believe that your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your BEHAVIOR does. We also believe that dogs have certain rights: the right to life, the right to toys, the right to enjoy. Just because they cannot talk, doesn’t mean they don’t feel what they’ve experienced. Our dogs always believe that something WONDERFUL is about to happen! And it does on a daily basis!
